The Institute for the Study of the Ancient World at NYU (ISAW) is a center for interdisciplinary research and graduate education on antiquity in Eurasia and Africa. ISAW is also committed to making the results of this work accessible through public lectures, outreach activities, and exhibitions. The exhibitions are a visual manifestation of the ISAW mission and form a crucial link between the work carried out in ISAW and the wider public. The exhibitions program is an integral part of ISAW's mission.
ISAW does not have collections of its own. Its exhibitions depend on loans from museums and other partners in the US and overseas.
The Bernard and Lisa Selz Director of Exhibitions and Gallery Curator (the Exhibitions Director) is responsible for curating exhibitions and organizing an outward facing program of events associated with each. Integral to this is building relationships with lending institutions and academic and curatorial colleagues in the US and overseas. The Exhibitions Director manages a small but highly skilled staff, and works closely with other members of ISAW, including those responsible for finance, the building, digital projects, development, and events. A key part of the role is working with and training graduate students. They will be supported by an Exhibitions Committee on which faculty, staff, and students will be represented.
Required Education: Doctoral Degree in art history or a related field, or equivalent professional experience. Required Experience: 7+ years of related professional experience in a museum or academic gallery setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must include scholarly, exhibition and curatorial experience, program development, marketing, special events' planning, budget management, and staff supervision. Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Strong diplomacy, project management, negotiation, creative and communication skills. Ability to work effectively and collaboratively across a diverse community and a wide range of stakeholders. Strong people and financial management skills. Must understand the legal and ethical framework of exhibiting archaeological objects including the UNESCO Convention on Cultural Property of 1970, as implemented by US law. Ability to develop, administer, and teach academic programs, including a demonstrated ability to cultivate graduate students and staff in support of their professional development and in support of the organizational mission. Ability to mentor other members of the Exhibitions department, to promote their professional development and assist them in building collaborative work relationships across the Institute and the University.
In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is USD $122,000.00 to USD $162,000.00. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, clinical compensation, or other items.
