Job Description and Duties

Under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Correctional Education Programs and the direct supervision of the Supervisor of Academic Instruction (SAI), the Teacher provides both individual and group instruction to students in Academic classes. The Teacher is responsible for supervising the conduct of students while in the classroom; prepares courses of study and daily lesson plans to meet needs of the students, counsels students on their progress in the instructional program; works with students and helps them set and meet educational goals; participates in program evaluation and various committees; prepares necessary reports; and maintains accurate attendance and timekeeping records for students and incarcerated clerk/aides. The Teacher collaborates with outside agencies and community/institutional resources to obtain support, materials and resources; participates in training workshops, conferences and In-Service Training; and continues educational development to fulfill credentialing requirements.  The Teacher has sole responsibility for the supervision of incarcerated students and the security and protection of State and personal property.  The Teacher will maintain personal safety by wearing a Personal Alarm Device or by other department sanctioned means.

This job posting is being used to fill a permanent, full-time Teacher (High School – General Education), Correctional Facility and Teacher (Elementary School – Multiple Subjects), Correctional Facility position.  The vacancy will be filled in accordance with implemented hiring restrictions.

The Valley State Adult School operates on a 220-Day Academic Calendar.  The work hours for this position are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday to Friday.    

Please note - This recruitment may also be used to fill future vacancies, if additional positions become available.  Work schedules for other positions may be 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM or 12:30 PM to 8:30 PM

You must have taken and passed the Teacher (High School – General Education), Correctional Facility or Teacher (Elementary School – Multiple Subjects), Correctional Facility Teacher examination, be a current state employee with lateral transfer eligibility, or have reinstatement eligibility in order to apply.

Individuals who are eligible for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered for this position(s).

  • Ability to communicate effectively, tactfully, and courteously with staff, supervisors, management, and incarcerated students
  • Must be self-motivated, flexible, and positive
  • Must have excellent attendance, punctuality, and strong work ethic
  • Ability to plan, organize, direct classroom activities, and motivate and evaluate incarcerated students
  • Ability to create and effectively teach lesson plans
  • Skilled in preparing, tracking, and maintaining electronic and paper documents and records
  • Skilled in Word, Excel, and Outlook
