Position Summary:


Under the supervision of Telecommunications Administrator, provide telecommunications support, installation and configuration of all telecommunications related software and equipment.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide support for all telecommunications software and equipment installation.
  • Install, test, maintain, and troubleshoot end user telecommunications hardware, telephony devices, and voice and data hardware products.
  • Provide assistance to end users with office moves which include PC hardware, phones, peripheral devices, and possible wire relocation and additions.
  • Coordinate work assignments and schedules for the purpose of minimizing disruption of services and/or inconvenience.
  • Establishes voice and data networks by pulling and terminating cables, installing telecommunications equipment, establishing connections, programming features, following industry standards, activating remote access tools, and coordinating with contractors.
  • Documents network by labeling and routing equipment and cables.
  • Provide support for the health and welfare of all telecommunications services.
  • Provide support in the security and integrity of all telecommunications equipment and services.
  • Provide supervisor with productivity reports.
  • Utilize help desk system for the purpose of documenting activities, conveying information, and providing an up-to-date reference and audit trail.
  • Ensure availability of parts and equipment in locations where needed.
  • Support disaster recovery procedures.
  • Facilitate the completion of work orders assigned by telecommunications supervisory staff.
  • Train end users in the use of various kinds of telecommunication equipment in on-site settings.
  • Adhere to all telecommunications policies and procedures.
  • Cooperate and collaborate with project management, network group, applications group, and support services to complete special projects as assigned.
  • Adhere to employee confidentiality and comply with department policies and federal regulations under the Privacy rules of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  • Provide excellent customer service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times. Provide solutions for customer concerns and continually focus on customer service as our top priority.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality and present a positive, professional demeanor and image at all times.

Contacts/Purpose of Contacts:
  • Contact and interface daily with managers, supervisors and end users. Contact made by this position, both internal and external of the tribe, are primarily for problem solving, hardware procurement, scheduling of meetings and updates to systems, hardware and warranties.
  • Contact with third party sales, technical support, engineers, consultants, and analysts.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor`s degree in Information Telecommunications Technology or related field.
  • One year of experience in Telecommunications.
  • An equivalent combination of education and directly related experience may be considered.
  • Experience with Nortel/Avaya PBX system.
  • Experience with voice and data cable and fiber optic installation, termination and testing.
  • Experience with Windows Server and Desktop OS and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must be able to work various shifts.
  • Must pass Telecommunications related competency exam.
  • Must be able to pass background check to meet the employment eligibility requirements as they pertain to the position.
License, Certification, or Special Requirements:
  • HIPAA certification must be completed within 30 days of hire.
  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver`s License and must be able to obtain and maintain a Tribal Driver`s License and qualify for coverage by SCIT auto liability insurance carrier.
  • Native American preference shall apply to all positions.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
  • Knowledge of network and communications technologies including: communications protocols, switches, routers, fire walls, PBX, voice mail, cellular, PCS, network and desktop operating systems, structured wiring systems, carrier services, servers, desktops, and laptops, as well as Internet, Extranet systems and applications.
  • Knowledge of Telecommunication concepts, principles, and practices.
  • Knowledge of federal copyright laws as they pertain to the use of computer software.
  • Knowledge and a basic understanding of telecommunications interfaces, integration, upgrades, installation, and implementation.
  • Knowledge of telecommunications and network security concepts.
  • Knowledge of fiber technologies.
  • Knowledge of current technological developments/trends in area of expertise.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Skill in analyzing problems, projecting consequences, identifying solutions, and implementing recommendations.
  • Skill in operating various word-processing, spreadsheets, and database software programs in a Windows environment.
  • Skill in preparing, reviewing, and analyzing operational and technical reports and manuals.
  • Ability to implement, test, troubleshoot, and maintain telecommunications software.
  • Ability to provide telecommunications systems training and user support.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.
Physical Demands:
  • Frequent use of hands, wrists, fingers associated with computer equipment and cabling projects.
  • Required to walk for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally required to stand and sit and reach with arms and hands.
  • Required to climb ladders, access high and low ceilings, attics, crawl spaces and crawl below desks, server and network equipment racks.
  • Required to squeeze hands and body into confined spaces.
  • Normal visual acuity, ability to talk and hear.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Work Environment:
  • Normal work environment.
  • May encounter high noise levels, dust and second-hand smoke.
  • Frequent work within unfinished and non-environmentally controlled buildings while buildings are still under construction.
  • Uses tools and sharp objects that require safety protocols and practices.
  • Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
  • Travel may be required.
